Password do's and do not's

Postby dwhs web hosting » Thu Feb 02, 2006 2:20 pm

It's important to use a good password.

This doesn't mean it needs to be an encrypted novel, but there is some basic guidelines that should be met.

>First I will go over do not's..

1. Do not use any part of the username at all. In fact cpanel will not take a password like this. So doing this will take your control panels out of sync.

2. Don't use a word in the dictionary, there are hacker programs that can scan a dictionary worth of words in 5 minutes. It's best if you really really want to use a word to at least put one or two numbers in it somewhere. Like if you want to use "tiger" try "ti1ge7r"

3. Don't use too many characters (10 max and 7-8 is best), to many characters will just leave more room to mess up typing it in and can cause confusion about what your password is.

4. Don't email your password from a third party email, almost all outgoing mail is scanned so your password could end up in someones security review box. Although most reputable companies like Verizon and SBC are safe in most cases since they monitor their employees, it's best to at least split it up or use a email set up with your DWHS hosting account.

>O.K. now password do's..

1. Do use at least 7 characters, 8 is even better and is the security password standard length.

2. Do use a scrambled set of 8 characters and numbers. For example "e567yf7ye" is a perfect password and would take years to crack.

3. Do use a password manager like Norton's password manager, this is better since you never even type the password. For example in cyber café's or at work you can login without questioning if your key strokes where recorded.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you,
